Solar energy facts
Solar power is on the rise. Homeowners and businesses alike are hiring solar PV experts to install panels on their properties, giving them cheaper and more sustainable electricity. But how much do you really know about solar power and its origins? Here are eight surprising solar energy facts.
-
Solar panels aren’t as new as you think
The first solar cells were made in 1883 by American inventor Charles Fritts. Made from selenium, they were unfortunately unusable, having a less than 1% efficiency.
-
Solar energy is incredibly abundant
While it’s obvious that our planet receives a lot of sunlight, did you know that in one hour, enough solar energy reaches us to meet all of humanity’s power needs for a year? In other words, covering the Mojave Desert in America with solar panels would generate twice as much electricity as the whole of the US uses annually.
-
Solar energy is cheaper than fossil fuels
In 2021, solar energy finally overtook natural gas as the cheapest energy source in the world. Operating costs for renewable energy plants are much lower, and the price of fossil fuels has risen, meaning solar power is now the most attractive option for those looking to cut costs.
-
Solar panel systems are more efficient than ever
Today’s solar panel systems are the best yet, with an efficiency of 15-20%. In the past decade, efficiency has improved consistently, and panels are more resistant than ever to extreme weather. As such, they can function optimally for longer. Of course, some regular solar panel maintenance is key to their ongoing performance.

The world’s biggest energy farm is in the Sahara Desert
The Moroccans have already harnessed the power of the sun in the world’s hottest desert. The Noor Complex solar power farm in the Sahara has a 580-megawatt capacity, providing electricity to over a million people.
-
Solar power improves world health
In order to generate electricity for entire populations, nations must power their plants with fossil fuels. As we know, burning fossil fuels creates toxic emissions that affect humans, animals and plants alike. In fact, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), pollution is one of our biggest killers, affecting over 100 million people.
-
Solar energy can be used for desalination
In 2022, MIT researchers created a solar powered desalination system that provided an inexpensive way to clean wastewater, provide potable water or sterilise medical tools in off-grid areas. It’s hoped the system could benefit the developing world.
-
There could be solar power stations in space
The European Space Agency is investigating the feasibility of space-based solar power stations. These would be continuously exposed to more powerful sunlight, which could then be converted to electricity and sent for use on Earth. It’s estimated an SSP station could generate up to 40 times more energy than a terrestrial station.
