Understanding Solar Energy
As the world becomes more environmentally aware, solar energy has become increasingly popular. We know that fossil fuels produce greenhouse gases which can hurt the environment, so switching to greener’ more sustainable alternatives is important. The question is, how does solar energy work and is a home solar system worth the investment? Let’s find out.
What is a Solar Energy Definition?
If you’re looking for a solar energy definition, it’s simply energy from the sun that’s converted into thermal or electrical energy. It really is that simple.
The Origins of Solar Power
Human beings have been harnessing the power of the sun for centuries. Back in the 7th Century BC, humans reflected the sun’s light onto shiny objects to light fires, and in the 3rd Century BC, Greeks and Romans harnessed solar power with mirrors to light torches for religious ceremonies. It wasn’t until 1839, however, that the photovoltaic effect was discovered. While experimenting with a cell made of metal electrodes in a conducting solution, French physicist Edmond Becquerel found that the cell produced more electricity when it was exposed to light. This was the start of photovoltaic (PV) cells which are now used in solar panel innovation.
Solar Panels – How They Work
The solar panels you see today are made from silicon and another semiconductor material. When this material is exposed to photons of sunlight, it releases electrons and produces a photovoltaic (PV) charge. This charge creates a direct current (DC) which is captured by the solar panels. An inverter then converts the DC current to an alternating current (AC), which is the electrical current used by household appliances. As such, solar power is suitable for everyday use. As you can see, PV panels use the photovoltaic effect to generate power. There are other types of solar panels, however, such as solar thermal panels which generate heat.
Is Solar Power Completely Green?
Solar power is a great alternative to traditional fossil fuels. This is because it’s a renewable, clean and infinite energy source that releases no harmful chemicals into the environment. So long as light energy is able to reach each solar panel, energy will be produced. Excess energy can even be stored in solar batteries for use after dark, so reliance on the National Grid becomes minimal. As solar panels last for over 25 years, the carbon footprint of solar panel installation is also incredibly small. Materials are typically recycled and as technology improves further, the carbon footprint will continue to decrease.
Do Solar Panels Require Maintenance?
Solar maintenance is minimal. Your panels should be checked annually, but take care to keep them clean and clear of debris throughout the year. If there are trees nearby you will need to sweep the leaves off your panels, and any bird droppings will also need to be removed.
