The UK government has, until recently, had a very ambitious plan regarding climate change: to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. A More ‘Proportionate’ Approach Needed

The government says it is still dedicated to achieving its net zero plan However, some of the shorter-term UK net zero policies have been altered in a bid to keep the British public happy. According to Sunak, a “more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach” is needed, that’ll ultimately save families thousands of pounds. He said: “I’ve got an opportunity to change things and what I don’t want to do is make yet more short-term decisions, easy ways out and ultimately not be straight with the country about what those mean for them. If we continue down this path, we risk losing the consent of the British people. The resulting backlash would not just be against specific policies but against the wider mission itself, meaning we might never achieve our goal.”

Short Term Policy Changes

So what does that mean? Here’s a rundown of some of the short term policy changes:

• In one of the biggest policy changes since taking office, Sunak confirmed the UK would push back the deadline for selling new petrol and diesel cars by five years. This means the requirement for all new cars to be zero-emissions will not come into force until 2035.
• There’s also been a nine-year delay in the ban on new fossil fuel heating for off-gas-grid homes to 2035.
• In slightly better news, the Boiler Upgrade Grant has been raised by 50% to £7,500 to help households who want to replace their traditional gas boilers with newer and more efficient alternatives.
• The government has also scrapped the requirement on landlords to ensure all rental properties had an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of grade C or higher from 2025.
